Rebuilding the flybride and shedding weight

The original flybridge had been rebuilt multiple times over the years, using ¾-inch marine-grade plywood doubled up to 1.5 inches. It was bulky, weighing over 500 pounds, and had seen better days. Our goal was to expand the bridge and seating area while significantly reducing weight.

By constructing the entire bridge with lightweight structural fiberglass foam sandwich panels, we achieved both—more space and a dramatic weight reduction. The all-epoxy construction, using System Three SilverTip epoxy and SilverTip Quickfair, provided strength and durability, while the redesigned seating now comfortably accommodates ten.

We also replaced the cumbersome ladder access with a beautifully crafted stairwell, trimmed in epoxy-coated sapele and finished with four coats of Epifanes clear varnish. The result exceeded my expectations—the bridge turned out absolutely magnificent.

A heartfelt thank you to David Arnold for your incredible talent and for bringing my vision to life.
