Chris Columbus Smith, founder of Chris Craft boats. From 1922 to 1972 approximately 100,000 wood Chris Crafts were hand built by Americans from 15.5 to 66 feet long plus 12,000 wood boats built for WWII.
Chris Craft goes big! From small wood runabouts to the behemoth of her day, the 57 foot constellation! 262 of these magnificent hulls were built from nothing but wood and planked in 7/8 philippine mahogany.
The wood constellations. This is the infamous 57 foot Constellation built from 1963 to 1972. Known by the lovers as a "Connie". She was a true coastal cruiser, known for her great seaworthyness, speed (up to 27 mph), roominess (three staterooms) and vast amentities. Optioned out with open aft area or closed and with or whitout the flying bridge, this was the boat to own and for 100-115K (1.15M today) you could have had one. The 57' Connie was the last wood boat Chris Craft ever built in 1972.
Sold in September 1965 she was christened "Courvoisier" and later named "Oasis" she lived most her life in Massachusetts before becoming an East Coast charter yacht hosting guests for Apollo mission launch cruises under the name "Toby M". She was sold at the Miami boat show in 1990 before making the over 5000-mile trip to Seattle, WA under her own power. She lived from 1990 to 1997 in Gig Harbor WA next to the infamous Tides Tavern before moving to Port Townsend for repairs and engine rebuilds. Her last journey was to La Conner, WA - La Conner Maritime in March 2005. We purchased "Toby M" in May 2005 on the hard, down on her luck, in desperate need of a new steward.
